We live in a world that is stratified along lines of gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, disability, sexuality and location, and in which the privileges, disadvantages and exclusions associated with such categories are unevenly distributed’ (Rosalind Gill, Gender and the Media, 2007)

Today, I reflected back my identity as a woman — not only something that has to do with gender, but also a character, a figure, an entity, a woman. Growing up, I was born as a little girl who despised, yet adored black so much. Yet, I was forced to wear pink to make me worthy enough as a girl. I never had a choice to choose my own garments, or decorate my rooms into those monochromatic tone that I adore. I realised, our lives as women were never free since our first blinks of eyes. Society defines us for how we look.

Entering the college life, I was more of an adventurous type than a feminine type. Yes, I wore eyeliner and lipstick, oh, and dresses and heels on some occasions, but I also love taking pictures with heavy cameras, going to chase sunrises and sunsets with my massive backpack. I was relentless, curious, stubborn — all the qualities that may never be expected from a girl. My parents tried their best…
